It does the job

My specific unit is newly renovated. However, because it is a very old building, there are still kinks here and there, but all relatively manageable to live with. The kitchen space is very small, but the overall studio is very spacious. The only complaint is that it does not have a 24h security and the main entrance into the apartment building is a key.

Great

The on cite management of the building seems to be run by 2 people. They are very responsive to basic requests regarding maintenance and packages. They building is a 3 minute walk to school, so that has been very convenient.

Extremely happy with this place

Every unit is individually owned, so everyone's experience might be different. My experience with my unit and landlord has been excellent.
It's in a great location; two blocks away from the law school, a CVS on the same block, and many restaurants near by.
In regards to the building, it's an older building but I've had no problems. I don't have any noise issues from any of my neighbors.
As to receiving packages, they all get delivered to the front office. The building manager is not always there for you to go and pick your package up, but usually you can just call him and he'll go and get it for you.
I highly recommend this place. I have friends with much less nicer units and who live farther away yet they pay more. Don't be one of them. Only thing is that it'll be a little harder to find a unit as they don't have a centralized unit to search; I found mine on Craigslist.

There are not amenities in this building but it is quiet and safe and that's all I care about. No pets allowed.

Good Location, Bad Most Other Things

The Monroe House is very convenient for GW students and the amount of space in the studio is perfect for me. Also, lots of natural light. However, a lot of the building's amenities and services are unreliable. Over the past two years (I regret signing the second year), I have experienced:

- Very loud street noise. I live on one of the higher floors and I can easily hear conversations, door openings, and street sounds from below. Also, there are large trucks that move in and out of the garage across the street on weekday mornings that regularly wake me before 6.30 AM.
- Several unannounced water outages (usually mid-morning).
- An aggregated multiple weeks of nonfunctioning basement washer/drier machines
- VERY unreliable hours and services from the guys at the door. It can be very difficult to get packages because these guys are often either not there to recieve packages from the shipping companies or are not regularly in the lobby for residents to pick up packages.

Clean, Friendly Staff, Quiet and Importantly Safe!

As a law student, given that Monroe House Condominium is reachable within 5 minutes, saves me time and effort. Whole Foods, Tonic, CVS, Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Foggy Bottom Metro - everything needed convenience is within a 1-2 mile radius. Worked very well for me especially during the snowstorm. The staff, although not present 24 hours, are courteous, kind and friendly. Some of the elderly neighbors are quite sweet and helpful too :)

The noise is minimal to none, from the streets or in the building itself. All in all would recommend it highly to any student for share or independent as it has comparatively the most economic leasing rates together with all the above conveniences.

Monroe House is Meh

If you're going to be paying $1500-$1600 for a studio in Foggy Bottom, living in the Monroe House is the least pleasant way to spend it.

1. The facilities are old and poorly-maintained. The only real amenity is the coin-operated laundry downstairs. I have not gone more than three months at a time without all of the machines going out of commission (for a week at a time) due to pending repairs. I would not complain about old facilities (because it is what it is) if it were not for the fact that a studio costs the same here as it does in buildings that properly maintain their facilities.

2. You will get your packages (but only if you happen to catch the one part-time building maintenace guy on your way in or out). The (one) staff does not keep regular hours. As someone who leaves shortly before 9 AM and returns around dinner, I have had to wait over a week on several occassions for packages that arrived, including prescription medications. I have also had to go into the package room myself to prove to the maintenance guy that I actually had a package in there. He does not keep a record of incoming packages (though he will sign for them) because he says that "he remembers." I have brought this system to my landlord's and building management's attention and they have no intention of changing anything.

3. There is currently construction going on across the street next to the Red Cross building (but on 21st st.). Construction usually begins at 6-6:30 AM on weekdays, which, to be honest, has been a nice "natural" alarm clock.

4. Lots of natural light if you're situated on the 21st st. side.

5. Fortunately, I have only lost hot water in the morning a few times over the past six months.

6. You're close to campus. Be aware that you are on the part of campus that is the farthest from either the Farragut West or Foggy Bottom metro stations (though still only a 12 min walk).

7. Great water pressure from the sinks and shower.

Foggy Bottom Reviews

Lots of pretty row homes, walking distance to many restaurants, grocery stores, and my school. Lots of trees and a dog park near-by. Overall, very pretty and scenic to walk through, and also close to other neighborhoods and essential stores.
I like living in Foggy, it's easy to get to school but also is close to Georgetown, which is fun for food and shopping. The northern part of Foggy (near GW) is about 10 minute walk to Dupont too, which is great.
Short walk to Georgetown, West End, and Dupont Circle. Many restaurants nearby and close to metro so you can get to anywhere in the city conveniently.
Nice to be so close to school. Short walk from the mall and other tourist destinations. Bar/restaurant/night life scene leaves a lot to be desired.
It is really close to campus so a lot of GW folks live here! You can reach a lot of places on public transit.
I personally enjoy the quietness of the neighborhood and its location within a close walking distance of campus, Georgetown, the water, and convenience/grocery stores. The neighborhood is also very safe, I am a woman in my early 20's and I have never felt unsafe walking home late at night near my apartment.
Foggy Bottom is a great place to live given the proximity to the law school. It's also within walking distance of Georgetown and Dupont Circle which are fun places to go out with friends and classmates. It's also has lots of bike racks for the Capital Bikeshare nearby, and the Foggy Bottom metro stop is a few blocks up the street.
A lot of college kids around but still not to noisy. Some food places a 5 to 8 minute walk away. Also a block away from Tonic, which is a great, cheap happy hour place for drinks, burgers, and tater tots. It seems pretty safe. Love the short walk to GW though (4 or 5 minutes).
