Really like 7th Flats

The apartments are really nice and spacious. The kitchen is amazing and is great for hosting. The building is pet friendly so you will run into a lot of dogs, which is great if you love pets. The common amenities are great as well. The roofdeck has an amazing view of the city and the business center has come in handy several times since I don't have a printer in my apartment. The building feels very safe and secure, and management has been great.

About Shaw

One of the city's oldest neighborhoods, Shaw is a cocktail of history, entertainment culture and of course, food. This neighborhood brings performing arts from the Howard Theatre and Ethiopian food in Little Ethiopia. It also nurtures a sense of gratefulness in the African-American Civil War Memoria...

Shaw Reviews

The Shaw neighborhood has a lot of history and culture in it. They have done a ton of remodeling old buildings. Lots of restaurants and bars (especially outdoor areas for covid times) with a varied range of upscale/foodie restaurants to divey bars.
Shaw has many restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and local transit
The neighborhood is rapidly becoming gentrified, for good and bad. When we moved in, the Giant grocery store was brand new; previously, the area had been a "food desert." There was a shooting on our street the day we moved in, and there continues to be a lot of targeted gang violence. People living in subsidized housing nearby, and have lived there for decades, are slowly being moved out of the city, and new expensive condo buildings are springing up in their wake. Expensive restaurants have filled the neighborhood at a rapid pace in the past 2-3 years, and the juxtaposition between the rich and poor is increasingly apparent.
Jefferson Marketplace has a great location in the Shaw neighborhood, surrounded by restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and two minutes away from a grocery store. It's also surrounded by residential neighborhoods which are cute. It's about a 10 minute walk to the closest Metro (yellow/green line), which makes my commute to GW Law about 35 minutes walking, 20 minutes scootering, or 5 minutes biking.
Neighborhood has had recent car break-ins on 8th Street, but 7th Street (where my building is) is well lit, busy, and safe. There is sometimes crime on Rhode Island, 8th Street, or lower down 7th.
Shaw is the trendiest neighborhood in DC right now. All the latest bars and restaurants are popping up along 7th and 9th streets. That said, it's still a neighborhood in transition.
Neighborhood is generally safe during the day although I would not walk alone at night in certain areas. Very busy during weekends because of U street.
Near 14th and U streets, which have lots of awesome bars, shops, and restaurants and a mile from the White House.
great place to live. so many bars and new restuarants popping up. also close to sooo many ethiopian restaurants which is awesome. great coffee, right next to the metro which is super convenient. close to everything really! takes less than 10 minutes to get the 14th st. only a few blocks to U street, and 15 min walk to columbia heights/dupont!
