Good affordable option
Near by the train and several bus stops, right off 53rd street for easy shopping, and a fairly calm neighborhood. Laundry unit in building, parcel lockers, and an elevator.
The Flamingo
Good location and price, across the street from the bus stop in front of Shoreland but no central A/C and no control over the heat. Water pressure and temperature is also not predictable.
A Great Place to Live (Staying here next year)
Honestly like this place a lot -- management is nice, haven't had any packages stolen, no issues, there is a pool for summer use which is good too. I also have a crazy amount of space for a one-bedroom, especially at the current price I'm paying.
A few caveats:
- a bit warm in the summer (good to bring own AC unit/fan)
- No dishwasher
- No in-unit washer/dryer
- No microwave
Great Amenities
I have had a great experience. The pool, gym, and proximity to the lakefront bike trail are my favorite parts.
Generally, a good value
Flamingo Apartments is quite a bit cheaper than other high-rises and its apartments/appliances/fixtures are just as good.
Pros: Cute outdoor swimming pool in summer, small fitness room, location right up next to the lake and Promontory Point, good package delivery/retrieval system, quiet neighbors, amazing lake view from some apartments, reasonable pet fee, generally safe location.
Cons: Not as many amenities as other high rises, management (although friendly and easy to contact) can be a little sluggish responding to maintenance requests, funky steam heat that can be noisy and only has two modes: burning hot or off.
Cuts both ways: The building shares space with Bar Louie on the first floor. If being able to go down to a bar without setting foot outside is your thing, it's awesome, but bar patrons can get very rowdy/noisy outside, especially during the warmer months (I'm on a high floor, but the sound carries). The 171 bus stops at Shoreland nearby, but since the buses only run one way, it can take a really long time to get back from school by bus.
cozy
I really like my building. The maintenance folks are great; there's a decent gym in the basement; the common spaces are well-kept. My apartment isn't huge, but it's perfect for just one person and big enough to have a couple of people over. I have three windows, which are enough to light almost the whole apartment with natural light during the day. My kitchen is really small, but some units have larger spaces.
The walls can be a little thin, and since there's no doorman, sometimes folks who don't live in the building can get inside when other residents let them in. But I've never felt unsafe in the building or the neighborhood.
The radiators can make it difficult to regulate the heat in the winter - but I run cold so the warmth is nice and opening a window can make the apartment comfortable. All in all, I definitely recommend the building.
Budget Place with Maintenance Issues
The apartment is a great value for a studio if you are on a budget, but there are constant building maintenance issues. The washing machines are often broken, the elevator is down (which is okay since it is only 5 flights of stairs). For in-apartment work, they are quick to respond and fix, but the general building amenities are a mess. The apartment is small, but the kitchen is new appliances and location is close to the bus pickup. Worth it for a cheap studio but you get what you pay for.
Maple Grove Review - great value for money
Great value for money, however don't expect something similar to E2 or similar buildings. Floor space is great compared to the modern apartments and a lot is possible. Davis Street Station is a 5 min walk and the building is next to the police station.
Spacious, low frills apartment
Very spacious apartments at great prices. Building has everything you need, but does not have high rise frills.
Good, though not always responsive
When dealing with property management, it is quite convenient and they are kind of efficient. Yet, the heat is not always functioning well in winter, though still tolerable.
Good value
Pretty cheap rent and square footage is a lot more than units for a comparable price. Easy walk to the law school and close to all the transit, 53rd street.
Mostly satisfied
I have a large and beautiful apartment with a lake view at a much lower cost than in other high-rises. The downsides are that management sometimes need several reminders before maintenance gets done, Flamingo doesn’t have some of the perks other high-rises do, parking is expensive, the steam heat system is old and raucous, and sometimes the noise levels from outdoors are really high all through the night because there is a bar on the first floor and the sound carries clean to upper levels of the building. On the plus side, it has a nice little outdoor swimming pool, the common areas are well-maintained, you’re just a couple minutes’ walk from the beautiful lakefront and walking/biking paths, the management and staff are very pleasant, and the immediate vicinity is safer at night than most other parts of Hyde Park.
Extremely Affordable and Spacious
The apartment is less modern than other Evanston properties, but is more spacious and rent is ~60% of what other Kellogg students are paying to stay in more modern luxury buildings. Getting to places in downtown Evanston is very easy by foot, and the only downside is the Global Hub is about a 30 minute walk. If you have a bike, it's an easy ride and a moot point. All in all I think the cost savings here makes this an excellent spot for Kellogg students without compromising much.
Park Wellington- Great Location but Limited Amenities
It's an alright apartment building. It's cheaper than the other apartments around and in a great location but no where near what you should be paying for the limited amenities and service. They went through multiple property managers at first but are now set on one who is very helpful.
Affordable apartment in a great neighborhood
The building is old, but well-kept. The property manager is attentive and maintenance is helpful and quick. The building is quiet and is placed on the edge of Lakeview East, making it affordable with quick access to restaurants and stores. Overall, have had a great experience here.
